As part of our 70th anniversary celebration, we’re proud to spotlight Brent Smith, President of Tom Barrow Company, whose 28-year journey with TBCo exemplifies dedication, leadership, and a deep commitment to the company’s core values.
Brent began his career at TBCo in 1997 in the quote department. From those early days, he steadily advanced through roles in sales, branch management, and ultimately executive leadership. Reflecting on the changes he’s witnessed over nearly three decades, Brent notes how technology has transformed the way we work:
“Technology may have been the most transformational change: take-offs from micro-film with light tables & grease pens, or remote plan rooms waiting on your turn for access to 18x11 drawings; massive catalogs, printed fan curves & performance charts; pricing grids for louvers, option multipliers (additive & not to be confused with discount multipliers), yellow recap sheets, desk calculators, word processors & fax machines – all to generate a quote, no sale yet!
All of that is handled on a laptop now. The shifts we, as a team, have made adapting to new tools, technologies, manufacturing partners, and products so well displays our principle of continuous improvement.”
One of Brent’s most memorable milestones was leading the Tampa Branch, a move that also involved relocating his young family. “Being here to celebrate the TBCo 50th, 60th, and 70th anniversaries has also been pretty cool!”
When asked about a project he’s particularly proud of, Brent highlighted a collaborative effort that left a lasting impact, “That first Tampa General Hospital operating room ceiling system project, so many years ago, stands out. We worked with nearly every stakeholder to get our foot in the door, keep it alive, and ultimately deliver an outstanding installation. The dedication and hard work by so many of us established relationships that we have nurtured over the years and continue to be strong and vibrant today.”
Brent’s motivation is rooted in pride for the company and a steadfast commitment to integrity, “We do the right thing, PERIOD! There are (and always will be) challenging moments, situations or circumstances that may require contemplation, balance, and grace to navigate. Having teammates with varying perspectives, with the same North Star of doing the right thing, keeps me motivated.”
To those just beginning their journey at Tom Barrow Company, Brent offers timeless advice, “You are among the best in the business, and they are willing to share their knowledge, if you’re willing to learn. Be a sponge, value continuous self-improvement, and grow.”
